Broomwood is a Victorian Terrace home renovation and re-build project located between Wandsworth and Clapham Commons.
The design brief for the project was to re-establish the elegance of the original house, whilst simultaneously maximizing its space to suit the needs of a large growing family. The design approach was centered around the introduction of refined industrial aesthetics, set alongside historically symbolic design references of the Victorian era.
The project involved a full demolition and re-build of the existing house, creating a luxury new build home with a subterranean basement extension below the entire ground floor footprint, and a new loft extension and side return to maximise the overall footprint above ground.
Broomwood has a light industrial touch, fusing together exposed steel and zinc fabricated finishes, contrasted against soft calming interior tones.
A frame-less glass box extends to fill the side return; a light-weight structure that hugs the side of the solid brickwork of the main building.
Internal vertical light-wells connect the basement extension to the ground floor providing both visual and acoustical connectivity. The light-wells also act as light shafts, designed to maximise natural daylight gain to the lower level, making full use of the south-facing aspect of the building.
Exposed steel elements and bespoke made zinc clad interior features, were used to express the internal structure of the building, and pay homage to British industrial manufacturing detailing techniques. Frame-less glass windows are juxtaposed against the solid metal structures to create visual contrast.
The kitchen was designed in collaboration with MannMade London. The units are made from Valchromat with metal edging, and the island has a granite top with zinc clad units below. The bespoke zinc-clad unit has a dual-function feature, that doubles as the kitchen island, and as the structure continues into the living space forms a built-in study unit.
Each floor of the house was reconfigured with a new and contemporary layout.
The first and second floors were transformed to create a master suite, children’s bedroom, guest bedroom, bathroom and a study.
The ground floor is open-plan and features our signature refined industrial aesthetic., An exposed steel ribbon staircase leads from the kitchen to the basement extension. Here, there is a large entertainment space, personal gym, guest room and en-suite facilities
Bespoke furniture is integral to the interior decoration and layout of the space.
Pieces include handmade shelving and bespoke sideboard cabinets made of ash and brass. All furniture is designed and made by MannMade London.
Textiles were chosen to introduce warmth, colour and softness to the scheme.
